Trip Overview

Upper Mustang Trek is in an area that is restricted to only a small amount of tourists each year. It was closed to foreigners until 1992 to protect the local traditions and it still has certain restrictions in place today. This makes it the perfect place for those wanting to get off the beaten path and explore a mysterious and ancient land, Upper Mustang trek is one of the popular trekking destinatin in the Annapurna region.

The trek begins with a flight to Jomsom, then a short same day trek to Kagbeni further north. From here we take the northern trail and enter the Mustang region. We follow the trail along the banks of the Kaligandaki river to Lo-Manthang, the capital of Upper Mustang. This city is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Nepal, but has a language and a people more engrained in Tibetan traditions.

Along the route we will have the chance to explore the local villages and to begin to understand the ancient traditions of the Mustang region. We will also see the unique beauty of the region, quite different to other areas of Nepal, with its high, desert like plains. The best times of year to travel to Upper Mustang are March-May and September-November. The trip takes between 12 and 16 days depending on your preferences.
